I Should Have Been A Better Math Student

I should have been a better math student. I never learned ounces until I started making bottles for the kids. I have to visualize something to understand it. I have no concept of milliliters, liters, kilograms, etc. Andy had to determine how much laundry detergent to use in the washer. There are no scoops in the boxes! There is always a scoop in the box back home. You might have to dig way down deep and get detergent underneath your fingernails, but that scoop is there. That amount is also dependent on soft, medium, or hard water. I don't know what kind of water is here. The dishwasher was supposed to come with a test strip to determine water hardness, but I haven't found that yet. By the way...depending on how hard the water is, I have to add a certain amount of salt to the dishwasher to counteract the water hardness. Huh?????? I asked Andy to do this science experiment with the kids, but he said he is not interested in that.

Back to units of measurement. I ordered a pound of lunch meat at the deli counter. The lady said, "Half-kilo?" I didn't even realize that I ordered incorrectly until she said that. I then ordered a half-kilo of cheese, so she started cutting it. That was way too much. In the end, I have no idea how much cheese I came home with. But I do know that I paid $20 for a half-kilo of sliced Sara Lee gluten free lunch meat. Ouch.

  1. You'll be surprised how fast you learn the metric system. Celsius was the hardest for me to adapt to. I finally just realized that 23-30 is nice weather, and above 40 is more than you EVER want to experience. (however, on that side of the world, you do experience it!) I guess the upside to not having a dishwasher is that I didn't have to deal with the salt thing!

  2. $20 for your lunch meat? That is a big ouch! Why wouldn't Andy do the science experiment with his kids???? Mr. Physics major! Does he think that he would have had the love and ability to do that stuff if his Dad "hadn't been interested" in doing science experiments and science projects with him! He best be spending some time doing things like that with those children. Especially since they will be starting school this year. I'm done with my lecture now.
Does your hair lather a lot with a little bit of shampoo and it takes longer to rinse it out? If so, you have soft water. Does it lather the same amount with the same amount of shampoo you used at home? If so, then you have medium water. Do you have to use a lot more shampoo to get a little lather? Then you have hard water. That has always been my test. I'm not sure what's up with the salt test.

  3. Sister, our dishwasher has a light right next to a "S"- that is how I know it needs salt, when the light is on. The salt should be on the cleaning aisle
